Dinnerware Terms Glossary
Accent Plate - This large plate, otherwise known as a charger, runs 8"-12" in diameter and is available for individual purchase. The primary purpose of an accent plate is to add color and detail to the dinner table.
Bread and Butter Plate - part of the traditional European place setting. Bread and butter plates range between 5"-7" in diameter and can be purchased individually or as part of a place setting or a complete set.
Demitasse Cup - also referred to as an After Dinner Cup, a demitasse cup is used for serving strong drinks such as espresso.
Demitasse Saucer - accommodates the petite shape of the demitasse cup Dinner Plate - ranges between 9"-11" in diameter and is used for serving the main course. Dinner plates can be purchased individually as a place setting, or as part of a set.
Mug - available for individual purchase or typically included as part of a four piece place setting, common to casual dinnerware.
Salad Plate - runs 6”- 8" in diameter and can be used for salads, appetizers or desserts. Salad plates can be purchased individually, or as part of a place setting or a complete set.
Soup Bowl - This multi-functional bowl can be used for serving of soup, cereal, pasta or stew. Soup bowls are available for individual purchase, and some manufacturers offer soup bowls as part of a five piece place setting instead of the salad plate. Soup bowls are included in a limited number of complete dish sets.
Tea Cup - used for the service of coffee or tea, these elegant little cups are available in flat or footed styles. Teacups are available for individual purchase, as part of a five piece place setting or as part of a complete dinnerware set.
Dinnerware Serving Pieces
Cake / Pie Dish - Cake dishes are great for beautifully displaying cakes, desserts, and or appetizers.
Carafe – wide-mouthed glass or metal pitcher with a spout, used for serving beverages.
Charger - A charger can alternatively be referred to as an underplate or chop plate. Food is not actually served on a charger; rather, this over-sized plate is placed under a soup bowl or salad plate to add color and elegance to your dining room table.
Cheese Board - specially designed to double as both cutting boards and service boards for the presentation of crackers and cheese.
Coffee Server - This beverage server is specially designed for pouring coffee, and is usually taller and more slender than a teapot.
Completer Set - a combination set of standard serving pieces. The set will typically include a serving bowl, platter, sugar bowl and creamer.
Covered Butter Dish - This matching piece is a great way to serve butter. The cover helps to minimize the butter's exposure to dust.
Covered Serving Dish - used for the service of hot or cold dishes. The cover helps minimize any changes in the food's temperature, and the standard attached handles make passing the dish around easier.
Creamer - shaped like a miniature pitcher, this serving piece is used for serving cream and flavored syrups for coffee and tea.
Divided Serving Dish - a multi-functional dish that's great for serving up condiments, vegetable sticks, candies or nuts.
Gravy Boat - This boat-shaped dish is convenient for serving gravies and sauces. Some gravy boats also come with matching saucers to catch any drips or spills.
Hostess Tray - a large tray, ideal for serving appetizers and desserts.
Pitcher - a large container, with either a spout or a lip at the top, used for holding and pouring liquids.
Platter - used for the presentation of meats, vegetables, breads, fruits, cheeses, or anything that can fit the space. Platters are typically round, square or rectangular, and range from 12" to 20" in size.
Ramekin - small glazed ceramic bowls, used for serving cre^me brule'e, cheese dishes, souffle's, or condiments that accompany the entre'e. Some ramekins are oven-proof, allowing for the option of oven-to-table service.
Relish Tray - This mid-sized serving dish is used to serve condiments or appetizers . Relish trays are often divided into multiple sections to help better organize the food.
Salad Bowl - This large, cavernous bowl used to serve salad and usually holds at least 28 oz.
Serving Bowl - used to serve anything you will need to dish out, including pasta, salads, rice, grains, or fruits.
