Flatware
Flatware is a general term for all types of metal forks, spoons knives and other cutlery. It comes in three basic varieties – sterling silver, stainless steel and silver-plated. The price differential is found in the most expensive (sterling silver) to the least expensive (stainless steel).
Why should you consider paying more for expensive sterling silver flatware? Besides the fact that sterling flatware looks more elegant, it is also heavier and more polished. Less expensive silver-plated and stainless flatware can often have rougher edges and is usually pressed out of thinner metal. It won’t last as long and it won’t look as good.
Your flatware choice should be made by considering how often you will use it, how long you want it to last, your budget and whether or not you mind having to hand-wash it (which is recommended with sterling silver). Once you weigh all of these factors, it will give you a better idea of which type of flatware is best for your home.
